When is the best age to photography a baby?

I'm asked this so often.  There are so many milestones in a baby’s development it’s so hard to pick when the best time photograph them is.  Below is a guide on want to expect in baby photographs and the different stages of the first year and half of their exciting life.Newborns -an incredibly precious time

Newborns – small and new, so delicate and fragile.  For newborns the ideal time is in the first 10days although up to three weeks is still ok.  At this time they’re still sleepy and very small.  This is an incredibly precious time and should not be missed.  There’s a lot we can do at this age with detail images, the baby in arms of the family, and proud parents.  A black backdrop provides lovely creative newborn photographs.

3-6 months - Smiles and funny faces.  They’re starting to show expression.   Most photographs the baby will need to be propped up.  We can get some cute photos wrapped in rugs and capture those chubby cheeks.

6-7 months – around this age the infant is starting to sit and there are more options and expressions for us.  Lots of laughs and smiles.  Outdoor sessions are now possible.

8 to 10 months – often the baby is crawling and full of energy, loads of photo opportunities with toys and various props to distract them.  Their true personalities and characters are now shining through.  A crisp white backdrop is often used for a very clean look.

11 to 16 months – standing at last, or at least able to hold themselves up, maybe walk.  A huge milestone.  This is a great time to include extended family and take advantage of the outdoors.  Great for canvas!

6-10 months - sitting and full of expression

Personally, I would recommend having the baby photographed as a newborn (first 10  days old), at 4 months (chubby cheeky smiles), followed by 6 or 7 months (sitting), 9 months (crawling), then 12 to 13 months (standing).  If you have to choose – make sure to get the newborn, 7 months before they’re crawling, and again as a one year old.

    The Baby Club

The Baby Club gives you three mini weekday sessions for ages 1 day to 15 months and includes an 5x7inch image from each session, all for $295.  Plus an additional 10% discount off prints!

    Why?

    1.  Now you can tell a story and share a journey.

    2.  Baby's have a shorter attention span thus the shorter, less expensive, sessions work well for parents.  But you're still not missing anything. Feel free to bring family members and pets.  You can always extend your session.

    Here’s how it works:

Contact us and set up your 30 minute sessions.  All 3 sessions are set up for weekdays.  We recommend the first 2 sessions are  done in the studio and the final session is outdoors.  Each session requires a phone consultation to discuss style, clothing, backgrounds, personality and current abilities.  Sessions include one background and two to three changes of clothes for the baby.  We also encourage no clothes for one option for newborns for creative Black & White detail shots.

We welcome family members and pets however the 30min session is tailored to a baby’s shorter attention span of 30mins, so extended family may need to be spread over multiple sessions.  If you have more than one baby that you want to document, such as twins, you can purchase an extension for $125 which will give us 45+ minutes to allow more time with each child.

One week after your session we invite you back to the studio to view the images and order your favourites with our help.  Members receive special discount on prints, framed products, portrait boxes and albums.
